Goldratt's Theory of Constraints:
A Systems Approach to Continuous Improvement
Professor H William Dettmer sets out the tools within Dr Goldratt's thinking
process, shows how to use those tools and how they are interconnected.
The tools help firstly
in locating the constraint within an organisation, process or situation... and
then secondly, help in developing and 'debugging' solutions for dealing with the constraint. |

The Theory of Constraints and Its
Implications for Management Accounting
Eric Noreen et alThis
independent research by authors at PriceWaterhouse found that the Theory of
Constraints-based approach to manufacturing management first outlined in
"The Goal", could and does outperform the better known "Just In Time" and MRP 2 philosophies.
The book explores the implications for Cost Accounting
in light of the rethinking that the Theory of Constraints forces in
traditional accounting thinking in manufacturing.
(Dr Goldratt has long campaigned against
the basic tenets of Cost Accounting. He points out that any appropriateness
in its use when it came into being at the start of the twentieth century,
was lost long ago.
He argues that Cost Accounting concepts drive the wrong
behaviours and the importance given to metrics such as utilisation levels,
is damaging the commercial performance of manufacturing organisations). As a
note; Activity Based Costing (ABC) as an alternative approach also needs to
be treated with suspicion.
For a general discussion of the problems of
traditional Management Accounting, see the book "Relevance Lost: Rise and
Fall of Management Accounting".
