On Results...
The word 'results' is used a lot in this web
site. It's odd but 'results' is a word that you don't often see or hear used
in relation to business and IT projects, or with business process improvement or organisational change programmes
or business performance management initiatives.
That's odd because the reason for engaging
in any of those activities, is hopefully, to improve upon existing results.
Results can obviously be judged positive or not when related to your aims.
When we use the word results, what we mean
is... clear, beneficial progress... measurable against a scale of measure
(metrics) towards the performance improvement objectives you have defined
for your organisation, business process or projects.
By that definition, implementing a new
system for example, may be a happy (or unhappy!) event, but the 'results'
are the outcomes the implementation of the system brings for its
Stakeholders, not the event itself.
The distinction being made
here is between tasks, activities, 'doing stuff' and... by contrast, the
outcomes, the progress, the improved results you want.
